Experimental Voice Work

Sophie Seita

This practice-based seminar will explore the many ways we might activate and experience our voice, both as a physical organ and philosophical concept of expression and sensation across multiple mediums (writing, performance, video, sound, including sign language and captions).

Firmly rooted in a studio environment of experimentation, play, and curiosity, the seminar will draw on theoretical texts about the voice as much as on embodied techniques from the world of music, dance, and performance. Each practical experiment will also be paired with an in-depth analysis of other literary and art historical examples of voice work. No background in music, sound studies, and performance is necessary!
